Why does one ignore their spirit?
You know, that voice inside of you, or that gut feeling, that urges you to do something. You can feel the excitement, the burst of creativity, or a burning passion for whatever it is. But then, the feeling passes after some time, and then you never do anything about it. Why is that?
Your spirit shows up quite often, even when it seems like an insignificant moment, such as seeing a piece of trash on the ground and telling yourself you need to pick it up, but then continuing on your way. Or maybe it's during a romantic dinner out with your loved one, and your song is playing and you just want to get up and slow dance, but you stop yourself because nobody else is dancing.
Maybe your spirit calling you to do something bigger. For example, you watch a presentation for a charitable event, and you are being called to join and do your part. You feel the desire inside of you to be part of something bigger and make a difference, but then you talk yourself out of it.
So why do we ignore our spirit? First, because we have been trained by society to follow the voice of our ego instead. Think about it, how many times has someone brushed off your conviction of "soul" and "spirit" as airy-fairy, only to remind you of the "logic" behind whatever it is?
Second, when we are called to do something different, to make a change, your monkey mind AND physical body (that darn amygdala) start to protest a bit. Once your body senses danger (even though following your spirit is hardly dangerous), your ego kicks into high gear and may say things to you like, "there's no trash cans so don't bother to pick it up as you're just gonna have to carry it with you". Or, "you can't dance here, what will other people think?" And what about, "you know your time is kind of stretched already, are you sure you want to take on something else?"
We have gotten so used to listening to our monkey mind, that when our spirit speaks we are less inclined to listen to it. But the truth is our spirit is the source of our purpose, our passion, and reminds us exactly why we were put here on earth. It is your spirit that will always guide you toward internal happiness by leading you to do the things that you want to do and by telling you exactly where you need to be. It is your confidence and the spark of your divine self-expression. To the contrary, the ego will always try to hold you back, and keep you in check, right where you are, happy and fulfilled or not.
