I had to learn about marketing as I was pretty ignorant about “selling myself” when starting my coaching and counseling practice. I thought to myself, “how creative that people can come up with such catchy titles!” For example, I’ve seen: “The Juicy Marketing Expert”, “Your Personal Growth Guru”, “The Conscious Visionary Coach”, “Financial Success Mastermind”, and “The Keys to Clarity Clairvoyant” to name a few. So in a great time-suck effort to find my own catchy title, all I could come up with is “Crazy Chick on Most Days with Bad Case of Monkey Mind that Won’t Shut Up”. Not so appealing.
Then it hit me, in a moment of meditative silence. Why exactly do I need a title, something to label me? I mean really, there are a lot of personal quirks that make me who I am. Witty writer. Hallmark movie sap. Counselor. Vata Dosha with a bit o’ Kapha. Former chicken owner. Badass butterfly. Health nut. Educator. Empath. Adventurer. But who am I? I am Lore Earley. Period. I love to help people heal. Period.
Early on in life, we are programmed (usually by others) to embrace our given “labels”. Were you the “smart” child? The one that couldn’t quite hack it in school? Were you told you were “fat”, and now struggle with body image or an eating disorder? Were you given a diagnosis at some point in your life (depression, BiPolar) and now introduce yourself as that dis-order? Were you told you wouldn’t amount to anything, and now you struggle with a series of failed jobs? Were you treated like a prince or princess as a child and now expect everything to go your way, having a meltdown if it doesn’t? Do you seek out unhealthy relationships because it was ingrained early on that you are not really worthy of a happy one?
These are some more serious of the subconscious beliefs about self that people hold on to, but even something as simple as “I am no good with money” can really affect your ability to budget and create financial independence. The little labels often wreck havoc just as much as the big monsters! Labels create belief systems. Belief systems drive your decision making.
Do I really want to label myself, even in my business as a means to attract clients? Maybe. Maybe that is the “smart” marketing thing to do. We are talking business and client generation strategies here. Any business guru reading this will probably tell me that I am talking about 2 different subjects. But what if I want to go with the ebb and flow of the healing world? What if I want to incorporate another element into my established practice? Or what if 10 years down the road I want to reinvent myself as a chicken AND goat farmer? You never know. My goat reputation down the road could be hindered by everyone knowing me as “The Great Master of Healthy Healing Smoothies”.
If you find yourself stuck in certain areas of your life, dig a little deeper and see if there is some kind of label attached that is driving your subconscious. Then ask yourself the following questions:
- Who’s voice is this? (Because even though it sounds like you, it could be your mother, teacher, boss, etc.)
- Is it really true? (Have a debate with yourself.)
- How is this label/belief impacting me?
- Where would I be or what would I be doing if I didn’t have this label?
The first step to making changes in your life is awareness, simply becoming aware of who is driving your bus. Once you start to recognize this, you can then do something about it.
I would love to hear about a label that is keeping you stuck! Send me a comment below.
