Greetings from Costa Rica!
I sometimes throw in the hashtags “freedom based lifestyle” or “freedom based business” in my social media posts when I am traveling.
I do mean it. I became an entrepreneur so I could travel and have the freedom to work from wherever. But that’s not the ONLY reason.
It sounds awesome to visit exotic places while making money. And it is. But as an ongoing gig, only a few of us human specimens are really designed for that.
And as much as I love to travel, I am not one of those.
So let me back up.
First of all, I was designed to be an entrepreneur. My father worked for himself, and I tend to voluntarily follow his lead on many things.
But I am also very high in self-expression energy. This entails a need to be free to self-express, and share original thoughts and opinions even if they aren’t so popular.
I am not good with people telling me what to do, how to do it, or how to say it. This is why I didn’t last very long in the traditional 9-5 world.
As a school teacher, I didn’t want to teach to a standardized test or teach remedial reading when I was stronger in math.
In the managed care psychotherapy world I didn’t want people to tell me how to practice, what to charge, or what I could say / not say.
I can’t tell you how many times I wanted to poke the eyes out of my supervisors who said, “because we’ve always done it this way”. If I think a policy sucks, I am going to share that I think it sucks and why.
So yes, I am designed to work for myself. And the travel I DO do (not to be confused with poo-poo), gives me fodder for my content and sparks my creativity.
But culturally, I LOVE systems and processes. So I am actually very routined in my every day actions. When I am consistent I feel grounded. When I am not, I tend to create a whole lot of nada.
So while I enjoy traveling and seeing the world, I also function way more better when I can stick to a routine at home. It’s often difficult to do that when on the road. If I were to try and create a TOTAL freedom based business I would be a train wreck.
There are souls who are strong in empowerment energy which is all about freedom. These lovely humans ARE the ones that can pick up and RV across the States for two years.
Natalie Sisson built her business as the “Suitcase Entrepreneur”, teaching others how to create a business on the road. But even she has a home base as it’s a basic human need to feel a sense of belonging in SOME way.
Souls who are primary in love or healing energies totally value being in relationships. Like close relationships. So venturing far from home and their people is of little interest.
So while it sounds good to have “freedom” as an entrepreneur, the degrees of freedom to which people actually enjoy it vary a great deal.
The beauty of knowing yourself at soul level is that you don’t have to guess as to whether or not what “sounds good” works for you. You know your special combo of energies and preferences, and how that fits together to help you create the kind of life that works best for you.
Need some help “finding” yourself that doesn’t require a year long Eat, Pray, Love sabbatical?
