When it comes to self-sabotage, your mind can totally have a party.
This is because there are several different facets within the mind and brain that can wreck havoc on your goals.
1. Your Ego.
A healthy ego is important as it is the epicenter of your logic and critical thinking. However, it’s job is really to keep you safe, and truly does operate out of a place of fear.
It doesn’t really give two shits if you are unhappy where you are. It just knows that this is a comfortable state of status quo for you. You know what you expect here.
2. Your Pre-Programmed Beliefs.
This is the food for your ego’ fodder. You ingrain messages starting in childhood from parents, teachers, and friends, and then graduate to colleagues, bosses, and society.
These messages suggest how you “should” behave and act according to the expectations of others. Sometimes these messages are healthy. Sometimes not so much. And when we hold a belief that is not our own, but act on it anyway, it creates a lot of discord.
3. Your Subconscious.
Your brain encodes all those embarrassing and shameful moments you experienced and often tries to bury it. It then runs little programs in the background that warn you to NEVER do this again.
This is a good thing when we made a really bad decision, and repeating it would be quite dangerous. However, if you got embarrassed at something that happened to you when you were 13 (at a time when EVERYTHING was traumatic), then your brain remembers and gives you anxiety every times to experience something similar even through adulthood.
The kicker with the subconscious stuff is that you don’t often know it’s there.
It just does its thing and then you find yourself in a spiral of procrastination (or whatever).
