Imagine watching someone as they are repeatedly talking to themselves, while using their fingers to tap on their eyebrow, under their nose, on the chin, under the arms, and the top of their head. This scenario is enough to warrant a thought that maybe this person is missing a few (or many) marbles.
Imagine doing this yourself, and thinking you have now totally lost it and should just go find a compound of tree-hugging, pot-smoking hippies. (Not that there is anything wrong with tree-loving hippies.)
But imagine if after one round, the stress you have been carrying around in your chest that really has to do with feelings of not being good enough, dissipates.
Imagine if you realize that the memory of being rejected by the “popular” kids in 6th grade has been sabotaging your relationships over the past decade. Could you then embrace the unusual to feel and live better?
What is Tapping?
Tapping works by using Chinese acupressure points to release stuck energy and negative thoughts and feelings in the body. It isn’t a new technique (developed in the late 70’s by psychologist Roger Callahan), and the concept of body energy and acupuncture has been around for over 5000 years. There is an actual science behind it, and many people are finding relief from physical and emotional baggage after using it.
Your body essentially is made up of many highways (channels or meridians) that connect organs, nerves, and essentially every body part. These highways do have an energy flow, and you know this already as demonstrated every time you electrocute yourself in the winter months by touching a light switch or other metal object. In Chinese medicine this energy is called “chi”.
Our mind, body, and spirit are all connected. The energy behind stressful thoughts and upset feelings can manifest as physical aches and pains, sometimes even disease. Physical illness can deflate the spirit and attract more negative thoughts and feelings. Oh, the dreaded hamster wheel!
EFT involves “tapping” on end points of certain meridians which in turn, calms the amygdala (the fight or flight meter) in your brain. When the brain relaxes, then it is able to release stress, let go of emotional garbage, and/or actually allow you to listen to and become more aware of your thoughts that drive your actions. When your body is in a full stress response, change cannot occur.
You can pretty much tap on anything that is plaguing you. Crappy self-image, divorce, anger, financial woes, physical pain, fear, post traumatic stress, anxiety, poor decision making. You can also tap on readiness…readiness to change, readiness to let go, readiness to think more positively about yourself or a situation.
What tapping is NOT:
- Hypnotism – I can’t make you cluck like a chicken while break-dancing (though that would be moderately entertaining depending on your dance skills)
- Brainwashing – I can’t put things in your head that aren’t already there (though I could probably become a millionaire selling that service!)
- A Religion or Witchcraft – uh, I have no words here because tapping doesn’t involve worship, nor are we calling upon any divine being for guidance

Most of the effectiveness of tapping lies in the set up statements and wording, as well as linking current issues with underlying past events and circumstances. Eighty five percent of our subconscious mind drives our decision making process. Misguided childhood messages that have been ingrained in our subconscious also contribute to stuck energy, therefore wrecking havoc on our adult lives.
So is tapping worthwhile? If your subconscious is harboring a bunch of emotional garbage yet driving your bus, then I would most definitely say, “yes”!
