Thanksgiving. A single day. A day of giving thanks. One day, and it has come and gone. This is like telling your child or family member you love them, only on August 23rd, because that is ‘Appreciate Your Loved One” day. Is one day really good enough?
Granted, I honestly believe that most people give thanks other days of the year too. However, life does get busy, and I think sometimes appreciation for what we do have gets pushed aside at times.
The most influential leaders of all time engage(d) in the practice of expressing gratitude every day. If you have read The Secret, then you know about the power of gratitude. To quote Joe Vitale, “as soon as you start to feel different about what you already have, you will start to attract more of the good things”. Like attracts like, so the more gratitude you express, the more benefits you will receive in return.
Deepak Chopra also makes a roundabout reference to gratitude in his book, The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success. The Law of Giving and Receiving is dynamic, and suggests that the more you give the “gifts of caring, affection, appreciation, and love”, the more you will receive these same gifts from others.
So what is the alternative? Focusing on dissatisfaction, resentment, what you don’t have, jealousy, and all things in your life that you don’t want. But, be prepared to attract more negativity in your life if this is the path you choose. This kind of thought will keep you stuck in a rut, foster depression, and/or bring on a case of the holiday (or life) ‘blues’.
If you are indeed stuck in a pile of mental poo (I’ve been there), and want to get out, one easy way is to start a gratitude journal and add to it every day. Love what you have. A nice house? A clean apartment? A loved one (the 4 legged kind too)? $100 in the bank account? A turtle that loves your porch and poops on it every day?

1. the husband and all his caveman noises
2. my businesses partner, a source of inspiration and motivation
3. clean sheets and laundry done
4. cheesy Hallmark channel movies (how could you not love those!)
5. my folks
6. good neighbors
7. and brand new avocado and mango trees in my backyard
