Over Labor Day weekend I went to a place that soothes my soul. It is that place that when you go there, you are instantly transformed into the calm and peaceful version of yourself. You can breathe deeply, and you feel your burdens lift for the moment. It is a place of stillness, and keeps you in the moment.
For me, this place is on the water. It probably stems from my fond childhood memories of weekend sailing trips with my parents and swimming freely in the deep, blue ocean. I get to this place, and am instantly transformed.
This past weekend I cleaned my soul in the Florida Keys. (If you follow me on Instagram, you have already gotten a snapshot of what makes me happy there.) I feel refreshed and grateful for the friends/family that I coincidentally ran into down there and for the beauty that the landscape provided.
I have traveled a lot. And seen many different places. But it is always somewhere by the ocean that frees my stress, worry, and anxiety from the constraints of my chest (which is where I tend to carry the weight of the world).
While it would be nice to escape to the Keys or Hawaii, or sail off into to the sunset on a cruise every weekend, it just doesn’t happen. However, I can still tap into that feeling I get when I’m on the boat watching the sun set, even when I am at home. As a matter of fact, I use the power of the “happy place” with my clients that are seeing me for stress, anxiety, or trauma.
It’s quite simple:
- Get comfortable in a quiet location.
- Close your eyes and visualize a snapshot of the place that soothes your soul.
- Put yourself in that photo and focus on what you see, the smells, and the sounds.
- Breathe deeply and let yourself feel what it is like to really be there.
- Spend some time here until you feel some of your stress or physical tension dissipate.
This technique works, but may take a little practice.
Where is your soul-lifting sweet spot? Have you been there lately?
