There is quite a long story behind this answer as it really developed from my own personal journey to health and wellness. I talk about how I got from point A to B in my podcast episode for this week (listen below or in iTunes), but for the sake of this written post, I provided the abbreviated version.
So, why do I address the mind, body, AND soul when I work with my clients? Because…
1. Working solely with the mind takes a long, long, long time.
I know this because I spent many years as a traditional “talk” therapist. If you have a minimal amount of emotional baggage in your life, or are looking to make a fairly simple change, then doing some reframing and mindset work is relatively easy.
However, most of us deal with at least one big, painful, doozie of something during our lifetime that is now standing in the way of what we want to. In this case, just working with “how you think” is typically not sufficient enough to move you through in a timely manner. And this especially holds true if your past has been riddled with a lot of trauma, in which your physical body then ALSO starts to remember and store the trauma. This leads me to number two…
2. When you experience something uncomfortable, embarrassing, or traumatic, the amygdala part of your brain (fight or flight mechanism) encodes this action as “dangerous”. Sometimes you encounter a very difficult, life-threatening situation, and it is indeed very dangerous to be in the same situation again. In this case, you want your body’s autonomic stress response to take over.
Other times, you experience something extremely hard, uncomfortable, or embarrassing, but your amygdala still tells the body that repeating this event is life or death “dangerous”. So public speaking becomes a threat. Moving to a new country to start a new job becomes a threat (even though you really want this job). Breaking off a toxic relationship becomes a threat.
Fast forward to NOW and your physical body is STILL responding to things that happened a long time ago. Therefore, if your physical body is shutting you down in the form of anxiety, panic attacks, extreme nervousness, sweating, chest pressure, etc., no amount of mindset work is going to do a bit of good here unless you re-train the amygdala.
3. Tackling issues at soul level was the last piece of my puzzle. But I didn’t know how important it really was until I learned my soul’s superpower, how it best operates, and the unresolved past choices that were holding it back from being able to fully express itself.
This was a game changer, mostly because I COULD STOP SEEKING. I found peace in not having to search anymore for my purpose, or look for answers from others. I felt energetically lighter, and free to stop repeating the same unhelpful patterns in my life. A lot of my remaining money blocks also vanished (an unexpected perk).
Knowing who I was at soul level paved the way so I could start DOING versus discovering. And the only way to make change, whether it be personal or to grow your business, is to have clarity and take action.
Knowing what I do now, this is actually the FIRST piece I tackle with my clients because it then makes the mindset and physical body work sooooooo much easier!
